5 Natural Remedies That Will Change Your Face Overnight

Written by Cathryn Hurdle, a first year public relations student at Humber College, Toronto.

One complaint, that I can attest too, as well as I’m sure many men and women can too, is that my face just doesn’t look as nice in the morning as it does any other time of day. Whether its redness, puffiness, pimples, dark circles or all of the above, dealing with an uneven complexion is frustrating.

I’ve always been interested in natural products and DIY beauty products that can be found in my own home. I’ve done plenty of research over the years and here I’ve come up with a list of products that can change your face overnight. Okay…maybe that’s a little dramatic, but seriously…these products can radically improve your complexion.

1.  Coconut oil

coconut-oil-on-spoon-300x198This is the holy grail of all skin products. I could dedicate an entire post to coconut oil alone, but we’ll save that for another day. Coconut oil is one of the most diverse oils and as an avid  user, I can affirm that this is a product that works, that wont break the bank and a natural product that you will feel good about putting on your skin.

You can use coconut oil for virtually every part of your body. But here is a few ways to use it:

  1. DRY SKIN. DRY SKIN. DRY SKIN. I cannot stress this enough. Applying a layer of coconut oil to any problem areas on your face and/or body can seriously help treat that stubborn dry skin.
  2. Dry lips. Ditch your chapstick and use coconut oil instead. Again applying a thin layer before bed will hydrate your lips and keep them looking soft throughout the cold season.
  3. Apply coconut oil around your eyes before bed to help reduce puffiness and tired eyes in the morning. Coconut oil is also known to stimulate eyelash growth too! BONUS. Check out this link for more ways to use coconut oil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4YYCZX92Mw

2.  Vaseline

Unfortunately, it’s that time of year again and our lips are taking the toll in this cold dry weather. Vaseline is my go-to lip product whenever I can feel them getting dry and cracked. Petroleum jelly is naturally thick and it has the ability to lock in moisture, so it doesn’t necessarily have natural moisturizing properties but it does help to keep lips soothed and moisturized.tumblr_ndcr06lkty1qeo244o1_500

TIP: One of my secret tips to maintaining soft lips is to always apply at night before bed. Many times we apply lip chap or other lip products during the day but it gets wiped off before it really has the chance to take effect. By applying at night you can assure that the product has time to soak in and that you’re getting the full benefit.

3.  Lavender

One of the major causes of puffiness and redness in the morning is lack of sleep. If you find you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep through the night lavender is an amazing solution. When lavender is inhaled it naturally releases melatonin, the chemicalKids-sleep-tips---put-lavender-in-their-bath in our brain that makes us sleepy. Now there are  variety of lavender products on the market to choose from so I encourage you do some research on what might work best for you.

TURN IT OFF: getting enough sleep affects your entire well-being, including your face…try turning off your electronics 30 minutes before you go to bed. This calms your mind allowing yourself to get the best sleep possible. Need help distracting yourself without electronics? Take a bath, read, or just catch up with your significant other before hitting the hay.

4.  Baking soda & water

Nothing is worse than waking up with a pimple. But don’t freak out! Here’s a solution to help get rid of those nasty red spots before they get out of hand. Baking soda and water. This is a super easy spot treatment that actually works. I’ve used so many different products on my face and honestly, very few have come close to working as quickly and effectively as baking soda and water. The baking soda dries out pimples causing them to heal faster and it also relieves redness, making problem spots less noticeable. soda

Follow these five steps for clear skin:

  1. Add a spoonful of baking soda to a small bowl.
  2. Add about 1/2 of a spoon full of water or enough to turn mixture into a thick paste (Be careful how much water you add…you don’t want the mixture to be to runny).
  3. Stir together. Apply to trouble spot(s).
  4. Leave on skin for about 10 minutes or until paste has fully dried.
  5. Wash off and pat dry. Continue with normal night-time facial routine.

5.  Water & lemon

This is a really soothing drink you can make before getting your beauty sleep that will actually reduce redness and inflammation in the morning. Ascorbic acid, the fancy term for Vitamin C,  is packed full of anti-inflammatory properties tlemonhat will make your skin glow. Make a nice warm cup of hot lemon water before bed and see for yourself, the effects it has by the time you wake up.

GET THIS: lemon and water have also been proven to have more than just anti-inflammatory effects, this is a great article I found which explains all the benefits of lemon, and it even includes a few recipes. Worth the read… http://rootandsprouts.com/benefits-of-lemon-water-according-to-science/

You don’t have to get stuck paying more money than you have too, especially when many solutions to your beauty needs can be made at home.

There are so many alternatives to beauty products that can be found in your own home. Take the time and research the alternatives and have fun trying out new products. Leave a comment below or tweet me your thoughts @cathrynxjayne.
