Will Apple Watch be the Rolex of the future?

By Andres Chaux, Humber College student

Apple has recently come up with a smart watch with tons of features that aim at making people’s lives easier and more convenient. It is the first time they are entering this type of market and there are a lot of uncertainties in terms of its future. Every time Apple comes up with a new product there is so much excitement and hype that the expectations grow to an enormous proportion, this is definitely not a different scenario. Since it is not for sale yet, no one knows how people are going to adapt to it. I guess we will have to wait for the release date which will be on April 24, 2015.

Will it be the next big step of technology or will it just be another gadget? The company is promising many things and making it look like it is such an important tool that everybody should run to get it as soon as it is available for sale. According to them; “Watch represents a new chapter in the relationship people have with technology, it’s the most personal product we’ve ever made, because it’s the first one designed to be worn”. It may be very convenient but in reality it has the same features people are accustomed to use in their smart phones, there is little innovation besides the fact that it is the first wearable device.

It works by connecting with an Iphone through bluetooth or Wi-Fi, it allows you to make calls, check your messages, listen to music, download apps and lastly it tells you the time. Apple created an app store specifically for the “Watch”, therefore it will eventually upload different kinds of apps for users to get the most out of it. Among other features, it is capable of checking your blood pressure and help you in your work out routines. It is completely customizable and with 8 Gigs of storage it gives you plenty of  power to use it in many different ways. If you want to find out what are the full specifications, click on the following links:

The price and design is something that is currently causing a lot of controversy, There are three styles to choose from and 38 models in total with significant price differences. The Apple Watch Sport is going to start at $349, but the mid-tier Apple Watch is going to start at $549, while the top-end Apple Watch Edition will be starting at $10,000 and go all the way up to $17,000.

Many people are asking themselves if the Apple Watch is going to fit in the luxurious watches industry and how are they going to compete with brands like Rolex or Cartier. With these kinds of prices, Apple aims at entering this industry but it is uncertain if they will succeed. Rolex and Cartier are established brands with global recognition and history of high quality, these brands create an illusion of wealth on people who wear them. In the case of Apple, they have good brand recognition but in a different industry, people who wear the “Apple Watch Edition” models will not give the same impression of luxury as if they were using a Rolex watch.

Everything people say at the moment are just speculations since the product is not yet for sale. It promises to give people who buy it a new sense of innovation, Apple will make people believe they are buying something revolutionary when in reality it is a product that brands like Samsung or IBM are already selling.

Will the introduction of Apple Watch mean the beginning of a new era and the extinction of conventional watches?

I don’t really believe that the new Apple watch will be all that revolutionary. It’s not really fair to say that the introduction of the Apple watch is going to be the “beginning of a new era and the extinction of conventional watches”. The reason being is because, as it was mentioned in the article, Samsung has already beat Apple in this market, and released their Smart Gear S watches back on September 25th 2013; two years before Apple. So in all honestly you can say that Samsung is the one who changed the playing field by introducing these smart, wearable watches, and that other companies, such as Apple, are just trying to catch up with them.

Of course the reason why I’m being hard on Apple is because I’ve never been a fan of their products, and prefer the android system over the IOS. Each watch has its own unique features that make them standout from each other, and draw in consumers from both sides. Here is a link that goes in detail in all the different features of the two watches and compares them. http://www.crn.com/slide-shows/components-peripherals/300073995/smartwatch-smack-down-apple-watch-vs-samsung-gear-s.htm

Reading this you will see that in terms of the factuality, and what the watches are supposed to do, both the Samsung and Apple watches pretty much do the same thing. It’s not really fair to say that one watch is more dominate than the other since smart watches are a new technology, and it all comes down to user preference; however, as was stated, I agree that both the Apple and Samsung watches can’t replace the luxury style of the Rolex watches.
