Valentine’s Day is coming up fast and whether you love or hate this day of the year, it’s a great excuse to channel your inner art enthusiast. Toronto is a multi-cultural city with a vast art scene. This makes for the perfect environment for you and your loved one to celebrate the annual day of love.
Whether you’re single, taken or on a budget, here are five of my favourite ways to spend this Valentine’s Day:
Night at the Museum
The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is in the heart of downtown Toronto and features multiple collections from contemporary to Renaissance art sure to please anybody. After perusing through the art gallery, you can head over to AGO’s Frank Restaurant. Frank Restaurant is offering an exclusive Valentine’s Day Dinner including: brulée goat cheese and pistachio salad, and butter poached half lobster.
Admission Price: $19.50 Adult/ $11 Student
Price of Dinner: $85 + HST
Become an Artist
Do you and your partner want to feel like an artist for a few hours? Another way to incorporate art on Valentine’s Day is by visiting one of the Paintlounge locations in Toronto or Markham. The concept is simple: the canvas, paint and supplies are provided for you, as well as a café bar to refuel your creativity, while artists guide you through a painting of your choice. Couples who come between the dates of February 12 and 15 will also receive a handmade flower pen as a memento for the occasion.
Admission Price: $68 + HST per couple
Lock Down your Love
For those of you who can’t spend a ton of money (I’m looking at you students), there are still ways to enjoy the day with your valentine without breaking the bank. In the Distillery District, there is a nine meter long installation of the word “love” which invites visitors to latch on a padlock as a token of their affection. Similar to the “love lock bridge” in Paris, this is a romantic way to express your feelings and create a special memory together.
Admission Price: Free!
Heart 2 Art
Not in a relationship but still want to get creative and have a little romance? Heart 2 Art might be your answer! The event is taking place in Waterloo, and isn’t your typical speed-dating event. During the night, the ladies will be painting on plates while the gentlemen help them out. Every five to seven minutes the men move on to the next mini-date until they have met every lady in the studio. At the end of the night, the ladies get to keep the plates. (Sorry guys!)
Admission Price: $35
So You Think You Can Romance
Maybe you’re not the creative type, but you still want to do something unique with your date. In this case, head to the Toronto Zoo to learn about the art of romance as observed in the animal kingdom. While indulging in an evening of food and fun, learn the elaborate (and sometimes awkward) lengths animals go through to attract a mate. The night will also have a special animal encounter and an interactive group presentation.
Admission Price: $80 for non-member and $150 per non-member couple
The possibilities are endless when it comes to incorporating art and romance this upcoming Valentine’s Day. Let your inner cupid run wild as you embrace the art scene in the beautiful city of Toronto. How will you celebrate this Valentine’s Day with your loved ones? Comment below with your ideas!
